Ah - fair enough, real-time and/or embedded software may have special requirements. I was mainly thinking of “normal” desktop apps, and for those - as long as your app/library is a single thing, the test-app should also be a single executable (hopefully linking in all the same object code, depending on your unit-test code coverage). Note that in my brief experiments with Catch so far, I arranged my test sourcecode as described here: ie. One two-line file which effectively contains the test-main function (and all of the Catch “library” code) and so takes a few more seconds to compile, but all my actual test code distributed over many other test-only source files. It's quite a nice trick to make a one-file header usable as a library. Imho the most challenging thing about unit testing is a good mocking framework. ![]() And googlemock is quite robust and has a nice API for most cases. Usb wifi adaptor for mac. (The lack of dealing with smart pointers as return values is a major drawback; must mention that!) As C++ offers no reflection, of course there is nothing around like the brilliant for C# - imho the best mocking framework of the C# world! But with googlemocks one can get the job done quite quickly. And as it fits nice together with googletest, I would recommend that. Catch looks very promising, but one should figuring out how good it works together with a mocking lib, before starting serious testing. Probably the widest used candidates are and Note that Boost test is header only, and is heavily templated, so can cause your build times to increase. Google test is statically linked, so will typically build faster than the equivalent tests in boost test. Depending on your usage the additional build overhead with Boost test may not even be noticeable, so it is not necessarily an issue. Particularly if you're just starting out then I wouldn't worry too much about this. If you're looking for something really simple, is a good starting point - it's not as feature rich as boost or google, but for most simple use cases you don't need the extra features.
